Pertaining to the centenary of the founding of the Republic of Austria in 1918, the Austrian Federal Government established the "Advisory Council for the Commemorative Year 2018". The Council is chaired by former Federal President of the Republic of Austria Heinz Fischer, and receives its support from a coordination office located at the Federal Chancellery in Vienna.
The coordination office runs a project-database to connect different groups and to facilitate smooth co-ordination of the events that will take place in 2018. Besides numerous events throughout the year, the key event of the Commemorative Year will be a ceremony in Vienna on 12 November 2018, preceded by the opening of the Austrian Museum of Contemporary History (Haus der Geschichte Österreich) on 11 November 2018.
The Advisory Council is in contact with neighbouring countries including the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia looking at opportunities for co-operation.
